Jack Symonds, composer and Artistic Director, Sydney Chamber Opera
Affinity Collective's 2015 Concert Series explored an Australian composer’s
connection with the experimental aesthetics of European music of the past
century and a half. This unique concert series featured recent and new
works by Symonds alongside significant works for string quartet and duo
by Shostakovich, Ravel, Zemlinsky and Panufnik.
At twenty-seven years of age, Symonds is fast becoming one of Australia’s
leading composers and artistic directors. Symonds is the newly appointed
artistic director of Sydney Chamber Opera, Australia’s only dedicated
chamber opera company that he co-founded in 2010 with Louis Garrick.
As a composer, Symonds is significantly influenced by the European
tradition. He describes his recent compositional language as ‘a personal
reflection of nineteenth-century Romanticism viewed through the
Expressionist leanings of the twentieth-century miniaturists, Anton Webern
and Gyorgy Kurtag.’ Symonds’ recent compositions include a string ensemble
work for Australian Chamber Orchestra, a piano quartet Australia Piano
Quartet, a stage work for Syzygy Ensemble, settings of Michelangelo
sonnets and a string duo for Affinity Collective.
